Encountering issues with your computer is always stressful. Rarely are we prepared for a problem until it’s right in front of us — and when they happen, it’s often extremely inconvenient. And with so many varying answers online about what to do, even the smallest of problems can feel overwhelming. Here are a few common computer issues you may run into, and how they can be fixed.

Of course, to get your PC back up and running quickly and avoid having to replace your entire setup, the professionals at ITs Managed in Grants Pass, OR can repair your computer fast and save you from any further headaches.

Malfunctioning USB Port

Working USB ports are important for connecting keyboards, a computer mouse, a webcam, or even a microphone. So when all of a sudden a USB port stops registering devices you’ve plugged in, you could lose access to your most frequently used items. Instead of simply avoiding the issue by writing off one USB port forever, try one of these solutions.

  • Restart your PC: You’ve heard this advice before, but restarting your PC can help with USB port problems. Simply re-boot the PC and try plugging in your device again. Be sure to unplug the device from the port before restarting it, and leave it unplugged until you’re logged in.
  • Uninstall or reinstall USB drivers: The second solution for a non-working PC port takes a little more time and know-how than restarting your PC. You can uninstall your existing USB drivers by opening up the Device Manager. You’ll want to restart your PC afterward as well.

Computer Crashing Before Boot Up

If your PC is only briefly coming on before shutting off again as you’re booting it up, there could be a problem with either your RAM or hard drive. When Windows, or your operating system, won’t load, it may mean that your RAM is corrupted and is unable to boot the loader, or that your hard drive is damaged and its data can’t load.

Here’s how you can troubleshoot:

  • Finding the culprit: If you have multiple RAM slots, try taking them out one by one and starting your PC. Eventually, you should be able to find the RAM slot that’s been corrupted.
  • Replace the RAM or hard drive: While you will need to replace the corrupted RAM slot or hard disk, doing so is much more cost-effective than replacing your whole computer.

Not Powering On

You go to press the power button on your PC but nothing happens. But your PC is plugged in and you have electricity. What could be the issue? Oftentimes when a computer won’t power on, there’s an issue with its power source.

  • Re-Check connections: First, make sure that your computer’s power cord is properly plugged into its power strip or outlet. If your PC still won't start, verify that both the outlet you were using and the power strip itself are working by plugging something else in like a phone charger or lamp. Lastly, check to see if the power supply on your computer has gotten out of place. Unplug the power cord at the back of your PC and plug it back in.
  • For laptops: If you have a laptop, try removing the battery and putting it back in.

If these solutions don’t work, you may need to replace your laptop’s battery, or your desktop’s power supply.
